What being cited in AI means
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews a question like "what is the best waterproof hiking jacket in the UK", the answer names a handful of brands and often links to the sources it relied on. Being one of those brands, or one of those sources, is what we mean by being cited in AI.
For ecommerce brands this matters because more shoppers now start their research in an AI assistant. If you are not named in the answer, you are often not in the running, however well your product pages rank further down. The discipline of improving this is called generative engine optimisation, or GEO.
How AI assistants choose which brands to mention
Each assistant works slightly differently, but they share one pattern: they look for pages they can read, trust and quote. Here is what matters for the main four.
ChatGPT
When ChatGPT searches the web it cites the pages it used. Its search crawler is OAI-SearchBot, and it also draws on third-party search results, so strong traditional SEO still matters.
Perplexity
Perplexity shows its sources prominently on every answer. It favours clear, well-structured pages and trusted third-party sources, and crawls with PerplexityBot.
Google AI Overviews
AI Overviews are built from Google's own search index, so the pages that rank well and answer the question directly are the ones most likely to be shown and linked.
Gemini
Gemini can ground its answers in Google Search. Your robots.txt setting for Google-Extended controls whether your content is used to help Gemini's models.
The seven steps to getting cited
These are the changes that consistently move a brand from invisible to recommended. Work through them in order, because the early steps make the later ones count.
Let AI crawlers reach your site
AI assistants can only cite pages they can read. Check your robots.txt allows the crawlers that power AI search, including Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) and PerplexityBot. Google-Extended is a separate setting that controls whether your content helps Gemini, so decide on it deliberately rather than by accident. Make sure key content is in the page HTML, not hidden behind scripts, tabs that load later or images of text.
Answer the questions buyers actually ask
List the ten to twenty questions customers ask before they buy: which product suits them, how it compares, sizing, materials, delivery, returns. Answer each one plainly near the top of the relevant page, in two or three sentences, then add detail below. A clear, quotable answer is far more likely to be lifted into an AI response than a paragraph of brand copy.
Structure pages so answers are easy to extract
Use headings that mirror the question, short paragraphs, lists and comparison tables. Put the key fact first. Add an FAQ section to category and product pages. AI tools summarise what they can parse cleanly, and well-structured pages also rank better in traditional search.
Add structured data
Structured data tells machines exactly what a page is. For ecommerce, the essentials are Organization (who you are), Product with price, availability and reviews, FAQPage for question sections, and BreadcrumbList. Shopify themes often output some of this already, so audit what exists and fill the gaps.
Earn mentions on sources AI trusts
AI answers lean on consensus. Brands that appear across independent sources, such as review platforms, best-of roundups, comparison articles, trade press and genuine forum discussions, are more likely to be recommended than brands that only talk about themselves. Digital PR and review generation are now part of search strategy.
Keep your brand facts consistent
Describe your brand the same way everywhere: your About page, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, marketplaces and press coverage. Consistent facts about what you sell, who it is for and what makes you different help AI tools describe you accurately and with confidence.
Keep content fresh and specific
Dated guides and vague claims get passed over. Specific, current information such as real measurements, materials, prices, comparisons and a visible last-updated date gives AI tools something concrete to quote. Review your most important pages every quarter.
Ecommerce specifics
Online stores have a few extra opportunities that most GEO advice misses.
- Category pages are your biggest asset. Add a short, genuinely useful introduction that answers the main buying question for that category, plus an FAQ at the bottom.
- Product pages need facts, not just adjectives. Dimensions, materials, compatibility, care and delivery details are exactly what AI tools quote.
- Comparison and buying guides win citations. "X vs Y" and "how to choose" content is heavily used in AI answers for considered purchases.
- Your product feed matters. A complete, accurate Google Merchant Center feed feeds Shopping results and helps Google understand your range.
- Reviews do double duty. They lift conversion on site and give AI tools independent evidence about your products.
How to measure AI visibility
Rankings alone will not tell you whether this is working. Set up a simple monthly routine:
- Pick ten to twenty buyer questions for your category and keep them fixed.
- Run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google each month.
- Record whether your brand is named, which competitors are named, and which sources are cited.
- Track AI referral traffic and revenue in GA4 from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
The sources that keep appearing tell you exactly where to earn mentions next, and the referral data tells you what those citations are worth.
Common mistakes
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident through an old robots.txt rule or a security plugin.
- Thin category pages with a headline, a product grid and nothing to quote.
- Only publishing on your own site, with no independent sources backing up your claims.
- Inconsistent brand facts across your site, marketplaces and social profiles.
- Writing for keywords instead of questions, so there is no clear answer to lift.
- Hiding key information in images, PDFs or content that only loads after a click.
